The best free floor plan tools in 2026

Lots of floor plan tools say they're free. Plenty of these “free tools” turn out to be trials, stamp a watermark on everything, limit you to low resolution exports, or let you save only one or two projects. We looked at what 12 popular tools really give you for free, and what the catch is with each.

The short answer

  • An accurate 2D floor plan in your browser, with nothing to install and no sign-up required: SimpleDraw
  • A free desktop app with 3D and plenty of export formats: Sweet Home 3D
  • Decorating and seeing your rooms in 3D: Planner 5D
  • Measuring rooms with your phone: magicplan

SimpleDraw is our product. We've put it first, but we've tried to be straight about every tool here, including our own.

The 12 tools in more detail

1. SimpleDraw

Best for: Accurate 2D floor plans in your browser

SimpleDraw is a scale drawing tool that runs in your browser, so there's nothing to install and no account to create. Walls, doors and windows go in at exact measurements, in metric or imperial. The furniture is customizable, rather than coming from a catalog. You can set exact dimensions and configure details like how many chairs sit at a dining table. You can draw elevations, garden layouts and site plans the same way.

Works on:
Web browser on a computer.
Sign-up needed:
No.
Free:
Unlimited drawings saved to your computer, PNG export at any resolution, and up to five drawings shared publicly by link.
The catch:
Editing needs a computer with a keyboard and mouse. Phones and touch-only tablets can only view drawings. Free PNGs have a small SimpleDraw logo in one corner, and drawing over a PDF or photo needs Plus.
Paid:
Plus is US$10 a year (at less than a dollar a month, this is far cheaper than most other paid tools). It adds full color, drawing over PDFs and photos, 3D and VR walkthroughs (on Meta Quest and other VR headsets), cloud storage, version history and logo-free exports.

2. Sweet Home 3D

Best for: A free desktop app with 3D and lots of export formats

Sweet Home 3D is free, open-source software for your computer. You draw the plan in 2D and see it built in 3D alongside. It handles curved and sloping walls, and exports PDFs, images, SVG files, videos and 3D models.

Works on:
Windows, Mac and Linux, plus a simpler browser version.
Sign-up needed:
No (desktop app).
Free:
Everything. The program is free and open source.
The catch:
The free download has a smaller furniture catalog than the paid app store versions, though you can import extra models. The browser version needs an account and does less than the desktop app.
Paid:
Optional paid app store versions come with a bigger catalog.

3. Planner 5D

Best for: Decorating and seeing your rooms in 3D

Planner 5D is aimed at interior design. You draw rooms to exact measurements, then switch to 3D to try out furniture and finishes. It runs in a browser, on desktop and on phones and tablets.

Web, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.
Sign-up needed:
Yes.
Free:
Unlimited projects, 2D and 3D editing, and PDF export from the web version.

You buy credits to upgrade individual projects. Five credits cost US$8.15.

5. RoomSketcher

Best for: Guided room planning on a computer or tablet

Sign-up needed:
Yes.
Free:
The editor, a 3D preview, more than 4,000 furniture and material items, and low-resolution 3D snapshots.
The catch:
Floor plan exports cost extra: after two free starter credits, each 2D floor plan is US$4 on pay-as-you-go. It's an installed app, not a browser editor.

6. Floor Plan Creator

Best for: Precise floor plans on Android

To save (web).

7. magicplan

Best for: Measuring rooms with your phone

Works on:
Web browser, plus a mobile app.

Yes.
Free:
Unlimited 1K renders and the full model library.

9. Coohom

Best for: Realistic 3D interior renders in your browser

Coohom turns a floor plan into a 3D interior design and focuses on realistic renders. You draw walls, doors and windows to exact measurements, and your work saves automatically.

Yes.
Free:

SketchUp is a general 3D modeling tool rather than a floor plan app. It's very capable if you want to model an extension, a shed or a piece of furniture. Because it's built for 3D models, a simple 2D floor plan takes more work than in a dedicated tool.

Works on:
Web browser (free Trimble account).
Sign-up needed:
Yes.
Free:
3D modeling in the browser, 10 GB of cloud storage, and access to the 3D Warehouse model library.

What to check before you choose

Do you need to sign up?
Some tools make you create an account before you can draw anything. Others let you try, but ask you to sign up before you can save.
Can you save your work and come back to it?
Some tools limit you to one, two or three projects, and one counts projects for life.
Can you get your plan out?
Look at what you can export for free, how big it is, and whether it's watermarked.
Can you get your data back?
If the tool keeps your plans in its cloud, check that you can download them as files you can keep.
Does it run where you want to draw?
Browser tools work anywhere, desktop apps need installing, and phone apps are best for measuring on site.
What does the upgrade cost?
If you'll outgrow the free plan, what will the total cost be over the length of your project?

SmartDraw isn't on this list because it has no free plan, only a seven-day trial. If you're weighing it up, see our SmartDraw alternative.
